Best Deals for Norway

Welcome to Norway

Officially known as the Kingdom of Norway, the majority of this country shares borders with Sweden, Russia and Finland. It faces the North Atlantic and is famous for its Fjords, which are popular with cruises.

Things to do in Norway

Whether you’re cruising down the Norwegian Fjords, going on a wildlife safari, visiting museums or caving, there are a huge range of things to do when to visit Norway. For those looking for an action packed break, there are a huge range of sporting activities, such as climbing, caving, trekking, kayaking, canoeing or snowboarding. Have a look at lastminute.com’s Norway ski holidays for more ideas on action-packed fun.
For something less energetic, there are a wide range of walking tours, nature attractions, museums, galleries and monuments to visit. There are also a huge range of family friendly activities, such as theme parks, petting zoos and wildlife safaris. For a really relaxing break, there are a number of golf courses, spas and wellness centres, so you can really take the time to chill out.
Visit the country’s capital, Oslo, for a cosmopolitan view of Norway. Oslo is the centre of the country’s science, economy and politics, as well as being one of the most important trading ports in Northern Europe, which has attracted some of the world’s largest maritime traders.
Nights Out
Norwegian food has a focus on local cuisine, such as fish and game, all of which is sourced locally. More recently, Norway has incorporated a wide range of international cuisines, which have been particularly influenced by American culture. Norwegian salmon is some of the finest in the world and is now a major export. Smoked salmon is often served with scrambled eggs, and meatballs and cod are also common.
In the areas north of the Arctic Circle, it is never completely dark during the summer months, which gives Norway its nickname of ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’. The rest of the country can experience an amazing 20 hours of daylight at this time of year. During the winter, days are very short and snow is common.

Camping and caravanning
The cheapest way to spend your nights is to bring a tent. You may pitch your tent almost anywhere on unfenced land for free, as a result of the right of access. In addition, there are camping sites for tents and caravans throughout the country, where you pay a small fee and get access to showers and kitchens. In these places, there are often simple cabins for rent as well.

Another new and interesting option is renting a mini-camper car from Nordic Campers. Essentially a car rebuilt to become a small B&B equipped for cooking, one of these will give you all the freedom you need to get around and stay wherever you want.

Cheap rooms
If travelling through Norway by car, look for the "room for rent" signs. Sometimes they appear in Norwegian, which will read "Rom til leie".

With some advance planning you can easily find a bed suited to a low budget. There are many different kinds of offers of affordable accommodation in Norway, such as B&B Norway which can offer bed & breakfast throuhgout the country.

A member of Hostelling International, Norske Vandrerhjem offers 75 different kinds of hostels from north to south in Norway. They offer cheap beds and the chance to meet people not only from Norway but from all over the world. You can book your single, double or family rooms online.

Budget cabins
Norway is one of the least densely populated countries of the world and there are vast areas with extensive networks of marked trails waiting for you. Hiking is free of charge, and when enjoying the mountains and wilderness, there is a big selection of cabins available. A total of 500 cabins of different standard can be booked through The Norwegian Trekking Organisation. The cheapest are the non-service ones, where you bring your own food.

What to do
Hiking
With or without your own tent, mountain hiking is free of charge. Alternatively, book rooms in The Norwegian Trekking Association's non-service or self-service cabins. The full-service cabins are less spartan and hence more expensive.

Rogers canada announced lumia 920

Rogers canada announced lumia 920

The good news is Nokia is finally getting some details out about its highly touted Lumia 920, specifically carrier deals. The bad news is they are couched in exclusivity deals (we’ll have more on that shortly).

Such is the case with Rogers in Canada who have announced that the Lumia 920 will be coming to the carrier with 4G LTE in November.

From their press release:

"Rogers is proud to bring the new Nokia Lumia 920 to our customers looking for the best unified experience and to further extend our leadership as the carrier with the largest LTE superphone selection in Canada," said John Boynton, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Rogers Communications. "With seamless access to entertainment, sports and business content, the Nokia Lumia 920 offers customers a world leading internet experience powered by the Rogers LTE network."

Sounds like a good deal for those on Rogers but not so great if you’re on Bell or Telus who are not expected to carry that particular model number—at least not on launch. Once again, consumers will have to chose which carrier they want to be a part of and that’s never a good way to get the phone into most people’s hands.

What’s the best, cheapest Canadian cellphone plan out there?

UPDATE: What’s the best, cheapest Canadian cellphone plan out there?

TORONTO

We’ve all complained about our cellphone plans: locked in a contract, too many hidden fees, not enough data…the list goes on.

But who has time to call every provider, wait on hold for minutes that crawl by, and engage in what could be described as a “challenging” conversation about the best plan available, then compare companies like Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, Virgin, , Wind, Koodo, mobilicity and the latest—PC Mobile?

President’s Choice launched new cellphone plans with shorter-than-normal (18 or 30 month) contracts last week. The website lists their “refreshingly simple plans,” which include options to get text updates to track voice and data usage, as well as to limit mobile charges.

John-Kurt Pliniussen, marketing expert and professor at Queen’s University School of Business, said these plans provide “novel options” related to duration.

Pliniussen said typically Canadians have to choose from year-based plans with three-year plans priced to possess the most “perceived value since the phone is virtually free.”

“However, the real key for any consumer is less about the length, but more about the monthly charges she or he will accrue based on their usage needs,” he wrote in an email to Global News.

America’s Verizon Communications has reportedly made an offer to buy newcomers Wind Mobile and possibly Mobilicity, amid what Global News reporter Jamie Sturgeon describes as their struggle to meaningfully win over enough consumers to be viable long-term.

We wanted to know: How do Canada’s cellphone plans compare?

We used a price comparison study conducted for the CRTC in 2012 by Wall Communications Inc. to find the average use of phone minutes and texts per month, and created a script which was read verbatim to each of the nine companies listed above. When asked (only by Telus and Mobilicity) the user location was Toronto, Ont.
